How to get rid of cockroaches in the house?

 Cockroaches proliferate at high speed no matter what environment they live in. In addition to soiling rooms, they can also transmit several types of diseases such as tuberculosis, typhoid fever, dysentery, etc. As a result, these insects constitute a real danger to humans. Here are the different ways to get rid of them.

Using traps against cockroaches

Cockroach traps are small boxes that can be placed all over the house, floor, or walls. There are two types of cockroach traps:

Glue traps

Glue traps have a bait in their center that attracts cockroaches and immobilizes them at the slightest contact. Based on the number of cockroaches trapped, it is now possible to determine the level of infestation and the most frequent crossing points. However, glue traps are not enough to eradicate all the cockroaches in the house. Instead, they are used to check if all the cockroaches have been exterminated after insecticide treatment.

Traps with insecticide

Insecticide traps also contain bait that attracts cockroaches and insecticide. After consuming the latter, cockroaches slowly die in their nests while contaminating their congeners.

For your information, these two types of traps pose no risk to humans or pets.

Anti cockroach gel: an effective product against cockroaches

Anti cockroach gel effectively kills cockroaches within hours or days. This product is easy to use. Indeed, since it comes in the form of a syringe, it suffices to apply small gel points in the water parts, in the kitchen, and particularly:
  • Below the toilet, along the drains
  • Behind the refrigerator and appliances;
  • Under sinks and sinks;
  • Behind and under the tub
  • In the recesses of the cupboards
  • In the garbage rooms and around the garbage chute.

To prevent cockroaches from proliferating again, it is advisable to renew the treatment every 6 months.

Anti Cockroach insecticides: classic and effective

Anti cockroach insecticides remain the best solution to eradicate cockroaches. They are available in powder, spray, or aerosol. Sprayers are the most effective, as they can spray hard-to-reach places where cockroaches take refuge.

Eradicate cockroaches by dehydrating them

There is a product that can kill cockroaches by dehydration, namely diatomaceous earth. The latter contains silica particles that attack their shell and kill them by dehydrating them. It must be sprinkled in places frequented by these insects to use it properly. Note that this product is not toxic to humans or pets.

Kill cockroaches with boric acid

Cockroaches can be eradicated with baits containing boric acid. Available in pharmacies, the latter kills cockroaches in a few hours. To make the baits:
  • Mix sweetened condensed milk and boric acid to make a paste
  • Shape the dough into a ball, then leave to harden for 30 min
  • Place the meatballs in the areas where cockroaches pass
  • Repeat the operation three weeks later to exterminate the new generation of cockroaches.

Due to the toxicity of boric acid, disposable gloves are strongly recommended during bait making. Likewise, remember to wash your hands at the end of the operation.

Sodium bicarbonate and sugar: natural products perfect for killing cockroaches

There are two daily products to get rid of cockroaches, namely baking soda and sugar. To use them as cockroach repellents:
  1. Mix a glass of sugar and a glass of sodium bicarbonate
  2. Arrange the mixture on plates, then place them along the walls of humid and warm rooms.

Attracted by the sugar, cockroaches will feed on the mixture containing baking soda. Over time, this mineral product will dehydrate these insects and eventually kill them.

Wine: an ideal bait to trap cockroaches

As well as being a great appetizer, wine is also an effective bait for trapping cockroaches. To catch these harmful insects with this alcoholic drink, you must:
  1. Half fill small jars with wine;
  2. Place the jars in the corners of rooms frequented by cockroaches;
  3. Place newspaper or tea towels around the jars so that cockroaches easily fall into the trap.

Attracted by the smell of wine, cockroaches will try to get into the jars. However, once they have fallen inside them, they will not be able to get out.

Keep cockroaches out of the house with eucalyptus essential oil

Cockroaches can't stand the smell of eucalyptus essential oil. Therefore, to scare them away from the house, all you have to do is:
  1. Pour a few drops of eucalyptus essential oil on cotton balls or on newspaper;
  2. Place the newspaper or cotton balls in areas infested and frequented by cockroaches (kitchen cupboards, behind appliances, near doors, etc.).

The actions and habits to adopt to avoid the proliferation of cockroaches

Cockroaches can proliferate quickly. There are a few actions and habits to adopt to prevent this from happening:
  • Keep all foodstuffs in hermetically sealed boxes (pasta, pulses, cookies, etc.)
  • Avoid leaving bread or fruit in the open
  • Avoid leaving dirty dishes in the sink or the dishwasher partially open
  • Clean kitchen furniture and remove grease stains
  • Vacuum regularly
  • Dispose of garbage in an airtight bin
  • Do not leave food scraps in pet bowls
  • Close the toilet bowls
  • Wipe down all surfaces of sinks, sinks, shower trays, and bathtubs
  • Make sure the taps are not leaking
  • Wring out the serving sponges well
  • Air out the house as much as possible.
If cockroaches are still hanging around the house despite these new habits or applying these various treatments, your best bet is to bring in a pest control company. The latter will do what is necessary to overcome the cockroach infestation.
